Helping find peace of mind

21-06-2017

In the lead-up to World Mental Health Day (10 October), both the BVA and the BSAVA have released details of initiatives created to help veterinary professionals in need of support. Under the auspices of the RCVS' Mind Matters initiative, the BSAVA has announced a series of CPD events to help individuals better understand the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and know how to communicate with people they are concerned about. Meanwhile, the BVAis investing in its Young Vet Network in an effort to address concerns about mental health in those younger than 35, by supporting recent graduate groups and helping individuals make connections with other young vets in their regions. Mental health has long been recognised as a significant issue for the veterinary profession, thus we would urge those in practice to get involved with these, or similar, initiatives to learn how best to help themselves, or their colleagues, in times of difficulty. If, in the meantime, you find yourself struggling and want to talk to someone, both Vetlife (0303 040 2551) and Samaritans (08457 90 90 90) offer confidential and non-judgemental support.
