Additional toxins are made by B. pertussis, including tracheal cytotoxin which damages the ciliated epithelial cells lining the airways. Fimbriae on the bacterial surface mediate adhesion to respiratory epithelium. The surface lipooligosaccharide (LOS) induces inflammatory responses in the host.
