High mobility group protein B1 (HMGB1) is described as a non-histone chromatin-linked protein that functions in stabilising nucleosomes and thereby regulating transcription. It is a highly conserved protein that is displays approx. 99% homology between humans and rodents, it is abundant within the nucleus and expressed ubiquitously.
