What are Anal Glands?

The anal glands or anal sacs are found on either side of the anus in dogs. Dogs use the excretion from these glands to identify each other.

In healthy digestion with firm stools pressure is applied to these sacs and they are emptied fully when a dog defecates.

Unfortunately a dog can feel discomfort when stools are too soft and the glands aren�t emptied because of lack of pressure. This often causes the dog to drag its bottom along the floor to try and relieve the feeling.

If I dog is very stressed these glands can also empty by themselves which can be very foul smelling.

Signs of Discomfort:

Dragging their bottom on the ground.

Biting or licking of their anus.

Having difficulty settling, sitting or standing (sometimes chasing their tail)

Infection of the anal glands.

Hiding, shivering or not wanting to walk.
