Our super ingredient for this month is Valeriana officinalis, a flowering plant native to Europe and Asia, according to National Institutes of Health (NIH).This month we take a deeper dive into this super ingredient also known as Valerian Root Powder. Valerian root is known for its calming qualities and is often used in dog supplements to support anxiety. It is thought that it may increase the amount of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. In other words, while the exact science isn’t known, it’s believed that the stems, or roots, of the plant work to block nerve transmissions in the brain that stimulate activity. In other words, valerian root has a calming effect on the dogs brain. This fantastic natural ingredient has been growing in popularity with owners and Vets alike agreeing that the benefits of using this ingredient are excellent in supporting the following: Reduced stress and anxiety Improved sleep Reduced restlessness and hyperactivity As with all supplements it is not guaranteed to solve all of your dogs problems on its own and veterinary advise should be sought should your pet continue to struggle.
