Keep Calm and Carry On

27-11-2019

The Broadreach Nature team recently read a great article about natural calming methods for dogs and thought they would share some of the key points with you. But before they get started it’s important to know what signs that your pet may be stresses to look out for. These include panting, excessive licking, yawning, drooling, shaking, pacing amongst others. Broadreach Nature have written quite a few articles on keeping your pets calm on fireworks night but some of the main known and most common causes of stress relate to separation anxiety (A Dogs Trust survey revealed that between 13% and 18% of owners reported that their dog had problems when left, and a further 11% had done so in the past), fear and aging. But often what is not considered is the stress passed from human’s on to their pets and this is something that should always be kept in mind as well. It is easy to understand how a pet may react in a stressful environment. But there are many things that can be done with usual household items to help your pet remain calm. The article mentioned, compression wraps which you can purchase from most pet suppliers or you can create these yourself – there is a helpful video here (please follow instructions carefully, remember this is light pressure and ensure this is not a further cause of stress), classical music, exercise, massage and mental stimulation. Of course not every dog reacts the same to certain environments or suggested help and only you will know what suits your pet best. If you still feel that you need more advice you can find some great articles on the Dogs Trust website for example: Top tips for dogs and puppies suffering separation anxiety. Help for dogs with loud noise anxiety.
