Caring for Older Dogs

Just because your dog gets old doesn’t mean that they are as fun as when they were younger. Of course it is just a different type of fun, just a more relaxed and slow paced fun. Of course for certain dogs old age comes sooner than for others and it is important to support them during their more senior years. Keeping them moving As with older humans slower and shorter is the way to go when thinking of walking. Make sure your dog is warm on the cold evenings or days. Steer clear of rivers and ponds as they will feel the cold easier and it is a good idea to carry a towel or purchase a warm dog coat. Don’t forget to stop and sit for a while to enjoy the walk. Keep to routine Your dog’s digestion will thank you for routine when it comes to feeding. With poor eyesight also try and not have a major furniture move round. A small nightlight is also a good idea for those dark winter nights approaching. Careful grooming Make sure to keep their coat in tip top condition to make sure they can have a good manouvorability with no big knots. Also run your hands over their coat checking for lumps and bumps. If the bumps get nasty and fill with liquid or grow really quickly it is important to get them checked. Not all are bad but it is a good idea to always consult your vet. Keeping their minds active Just like a crossword is great for older human minds so is a ‘brain puzzle’ for dogs. You can get some great options at any leading pet store – just make sure there are no small parts that can fall off and remember not to over treat your dog. We have some great dog treats here.
