Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is an infectious disease that can cause chickenpox (varicella) during childhood and herpes zoster (singles) during adulthood. It is known as; varicella virus, zoster virus, chickenpox virus and human herpesvirus type 3 (HHV-3). It multiplies within the lungs and it can cause a number of different symptoms (pneumonia, bronchitis and encephalitis).
