The 153-amino acid proprotein known as gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) belongs to the secretin family. Endocrine cells in the small intestine produce GIP, which is then released into the bloodstream. It acts as an orexigenic hormone, stimulating hunger and promoting fat storage. iIt has also been shown to have a role in blood glucose control.
