In both the foetal and adulthood, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF or VEGF-A) is the mediator of angiogenesis and vasculogenesis. It belongs to the PDGF family, which is distinguished by its eight conserved cysteine residues arranged in a cystine knot shape and its ability to form anti-parallel disulfide-linked dimers.
