Three identical subunits make up the multi-chain protein known as tumour necrosis factor alpha. Each of them has a transmembrane area, an internal region within the cell and a soluble section outside of it. ProTNF-alpha is formed from a precursor protein which has an N-terminal signal sequence together with a C-terminal component.
