Interleukin 17 (IL-17) refers to a family of inflammatory cytokines critical for antimicrobial immunity but also implicated in autoimmune pathology when dysregulated. The family contains six members (IL-17A through IL-17F), with IL-17A and IL-17F sharing the highest sequence homology. Initial discovery of this unique CD4+ T cell subset arose in the 1990s, when IL-17 induced cytokine was identified and named CTLA8.
