TNF-alpha is a 157-amino-acid protein with a molecular mass of 17 kDa. It is produced by natural killer cells, T lymphocytes, activated monocytes, and macrophages, and is primarily present in the form of a homotrimer in different solutions. The human TNF alpha gene was cloned in 1985.
