Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a hormone produced by osteocytes regulating phosphate homeostasis and vitamin D metabolism. As a key regulator of mineral balance, FGF23 lowers circulating phosphate levels by downregulating renal phosphate reabsorption while also suppressing vitamin D activation to decrease intestinal absorption.
