The FGF gene family consists of 22 mammalian members, includes fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21). The 120 amino acid (aa) core FGF domain found in members of the FGF family has a beta -trefoil structure. Members of the subfamily have a weaker affinity for extracellular matrix components like heparin than other FGFs due to the absence of one strand of the beta-trefoil.
