Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA, 3b-hydroxy-5-androsten-17-one, androstenolone) is predominately produced in the adrenal cortex and to a smaller amount in the gonads. It is a C19 steroid which serves as a precursor for the synthesis of testosterone and estrogen.
