Bordetella pertussis is a small coccobacillus that attaches to ciliated epithelial cells in the nasopharynx and trachea using adhesion proteins called fimbriae. A key adhesin is the filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA), a large surface protein that binds to epithelial cell receptors.
