BNIP3L is a pro-apoptotic mitochondrial protein that mediates cell death in response to hypoxia and ischemia. It belongs to the Bcl-2 protein family, key regulators of the intrinsic apoptosis pathway. First discovered in 2000, it was recognized to have strong homology to BNIP3, another death-inducing Bcl-2 member.
